I bought this book and "A Field Guide for Science Writers" at the same time. While the field guide is directly applicable to my vocation, I had a hard time putting down Dawkins' book. It is an amazing collection of intriguing and, at times, exceptionally elegant writing. The Oxford Book of Modern Science Writing is an anthology of scientific writings, arranged and introduced by Richard Dawkins of the University of Oxford. Published first in March , it contains 83 writings on many topics from a diverse variety of authors, which range in length from one to eight pages. All inclusions are dated post, and include poetry, anecdotes, and general philosophical musings. "The Oxford Book of Modern Science Writing" is pages long so there is plenty of space for the bits and pieces that Dawkins has assembled. There are selections from work by my two fellow judges--Sagan on the notion of science, which is presented here in bits, and Hardin on what he called the development of the commons--neither of which I found very memorable.
